The annual bluegrass weevil (ABW) is a severely destructive insect pest of golf course turfgrass throughout the eastern US and Canada. Given the potential for widespread turf loss due to larval feeding, there is a heavy reliance on managing this insect with chemical insecticides. Despite this, damaging populations of ABW are reported in new locations every year. In this 2 hour webcast, Ben McGraw, Ph.D., discusses the keys to successful ABW management, including proper timing and selection of chemical controls, effects of cultural practices, and alternatives to chemical insecticides. In addition, the development of pyrethroid-resistant populations pose a great challenge for many superintendents throughout ABW’s distribution. The factors leading to the development of resistance and resistant-population management strategies are covered.
